Canada is coming off a historic fourth-place finish in the Copa America under new head coach Jesse Marsh, while the USMNT is playing their first game since parting ways with head coach Gregg Berhalter.
Both countries will host the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup along with Mexico.
United States
Interim coach Mikey Vallas will oversee the USMNT’s September transfer window after the US league ends. Soccer fired Berhalter on July 10. The former FC Dallas assistant coach is reportedly set to become the first head coach of MLS expansion side San Diego FC in 2025.
Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly set to become the USMNT’s next full-time head coach. Pochettino has previously coached European clubs such as Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur.
The USMNT has two MLS players on its roster: Columbus Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and Charlotte FC center back Tim Ream. Schulte will represent Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, while Ream returned to MLS this summer after playing for Premier League side Fulham.
After being eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America, the USMNT has two chances to bounce back: against Canada and against New Zealand on Sept. 10 at FC Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium.
Canada
Canada comes into Saturday’s match on a roll. They finished fourth in the Copa America, behind top South American teams Uruguay, Colombia and defending champions Argentina.
Laying the foundations for success, Marsh’s latest roster includes 12 MLS players, including shooting star Jacob Schaffelberg (Nashville SC) and Maxime Crepeau (Portland Timbers) who appears to have secured the No. 1 goalkeeper spot.
Former Colorado Rapids centre-back Moïse Bombito was also a standout in the Copa America and joined Ligue 1 side OGC Nice in a club-record transfer this summer.
Following this USMNT test, Canada will face Mexico on Sept. 10 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
