This week, Peacock will broadcast live from Tokyo for the biennial World Team Trophy, which is comparable to the Olympic figure skating team event.
Two men’s singles skaters, two women’s singles skaters, one pairs team, and one ice dance couple represent each of the top six skating nations in the world: the United States, Japan, Italy, France, Canada, and Georgia.
Every skater performs in two programs. Point values that match to skaters’ positions in each of the eight total programs are used to calculate team standings.
In 2023, the United States won by a margin of 25 points, the biggest since the World Team Trophy was introduced in 2009.
Japan might have made progress.
Since 2023, the leading U.S. pairs team, the 2022 World champions Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier, has withdrawn from competition.
Japan now holds a notable advantage in pairs with their current world champions, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara. The highest-ranking American pair at last month’s World Championships was Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov, who finished sixth overall.
In singles, the competition between the U.S. and Japan is more balanced, featuring American skaters Ilia Malinin, Jason Brown, Alysa Liu, and Amber Glenn, alongside Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama, Shun Sato, Kaori Sakamoto, and Mone Chiba.
The U.S. excels in ice dance, boasting three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates.
A notable distinction between the World Team Trophy and the Olympic team event is that the former allows two men’s singles skaters and two women’s singles skaters from each nation in both programs, while the Olympics restricts it to one skater per nation in each program.
