In less than three months, James Robinson’s journey in New England is over.
According to the official transaction wire of the NFL, the running back was released by the Patriots on Monday.
After a disappointing 2022 split between the Jaguars and Jets in which he rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns on 110 attempts in five starts, Robinson signed with New England in March.
After rookie Breece Hall’s season-ending knee injury, Robinson moved to New York. Despite his early success in Jacksonville, Robinson was unable to make a significant impact with the Jets, gaining only 2.9 yards per attempt on 29 carries in four games.
Robinson’s profession in the NFL started as an undrafted free specialist who stunned the NFL world by performing alright in the 2020 preseason to provoke the Panthers to deliver Leonard Fournette and continue with the Illinois State item. As a rookie, Robinson racked up 1,070 rushing yards, 344 receiving yards, and a total of 10 touchdowns—seven rushing and three receiving—making their decision appear prudent. Robinson’s Achilles tendon ruptured at the end of December in 2021, however. That season, Robinson threw for 767 yards and eight touchdowns.
After less than a year, Jacksonville had seen enough of Robinson, who was recovering, and his replacement, former Clemson star Travis Etienne, so they decided to move on from Robinson and send him to the Jets in October 2022.
Robinson was signed by New England on March 17 in the hopes that he could add depth and versatility as a back who could play on all three downs. However, it appears that he has health issues that have prevented him from staying with the Patriots. He will be eligible for free agency on Wednesday if he passes the waiver deadline set by the league.
