Apple has announced that it will create a film about former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes, starring Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games).
Lawrence will play Holmes in the film, which McKay will write, direct, and produce. Holmes’ spectacular rise and fall began with the promise of changing the health-care system and ended with the failure of her company and a fraud trial.
The film is produced by Apple Studios in collaboration with Legendary Pictures and is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist John Carreyrou’s book “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley,” which broke the original storey.
A24’s “Untitled Soldier Film,” which Lawrence and her producing partner Justine Polsky worked on, just concluded production. She was nominated for three more Oscars for “Joy,” “American Hustle,” and “Winter’s Bone,” and won for “Silver Linings Playbook.”
McKay and Kevin Messick will produce “Bad Blood” through Hyberobject Industries, with whom Apple has a multi-year, first-look contract for written feature films. Excellent Cadaver will produce Lawrence and Polsky’s work. Gary Sanchez Productions will produce the film, which will be directed by Will Ferrell.
Since entering the original content game, Apple has landed some high-profile projects, like “Emancipation,” directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Will Smith, and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
