Today’s Doodle celebrates Labor Day in the United States, honoring leaders throughout history who fought for better working conditions. Its origins date back to the late 19th century, when some states began passing laws to officially celebrate the holiday. Thanks to the movement’s fearless activists, child labor has decreased, many people have more reasonable working hours, paid vacation, and work in safer environments.
On this day, many companies give their employees the day off to show their appreciation. Labor unions and employee organizations organize celebrations, such as worker parades, to recognize the positive impact employees have on the world. Conditions have improved greatly since the 19th century, but problems still exist and many workers continue to advocate for improved working conditions.
Happy Labor Day to all union leaders and workers, past, present and future!
