Max Announces “Joker: Folie à Deux” Streaming Release Date

On December 13, Max will broadcast Todd Phillips’ follow-up to the Oscar-winning Joaquin Phoenix movie, “Joker: Folie à Deux.” At 8 p.m. ET on December 14, it will make its HBO linear debut.

The divisive movie earned in $206 million worldwide, with $58 million coming from North America. It is expected to lose between $150 million and $200 million throughout its theatrical run, while having cost $200 million to produce.

“Folie à Deux” is a “scandalously unpopular sequel,” according to Variety’s chief film reviewer Peter Debruge, who also noted that it “feels like ‘Joker’ hates us — or, more to the point, it’s as if Phillips turned on his original audience.” It turns out that fans are giving back. Yesterday, I talked to a few theater managers, and they told me about an odd trend: Due to the negative reviews, people are either canceling their tickets or just not going.

The movie’s logline reads, “Failed comedian Arthur Fleck, struggling with his dual identity, meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital.”

Lady Gaga co-stars with Phoenix’s Joker in “Folie à Deux” as Harley Quinn. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Maryanne Stewart, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey, Leigh Gill, Ken Leung, Jacob Lofland, Bill Smitrovich, Sharon Washington, Alfred Rubin Thompson, Connor Storrie, Gregg Daniel, Mac Brandt, George Carroll, and John Lacy are also part of the cast.

Phillips and Scott Silver wrote the screenplay for “Folie à Deux.” Executive producers include Michael E. Uslan, Jason Ruder, Andrew Lary, Georgia Kacandes, Mark Friedberg, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Silver. Phillips is a producer, and co-producers David Webb and Justine Conte join Joseph Garner and Emma Tillinger Koskoff.
