Max has decided to go with Bookie.
Chuck Lorre, the master of comedy, has given the streamer that Warner Bros. Discovery supports a second season pickup.
Bookie, which was produced by Nick Bakay and Lorre, debuted on November 30 and concluded its first season on December 21. It starred Sebastian Maniscalco and was based on his comedy.
Amy Gravitt, executive vp programming and head of comedy at HBO and Max, stated, “The partnership between Chuck and Sebastian has proven to be a winning hand and we’re looking forward to continuing the story with this incredibly talented cast and crew.”
Warner Bros. Television, Lorre’s longtime studio, produces the series, as it does all of his creations.
“There’s no doubt that Chuck and Nick’s Bookie won big this season as they took us on a hilarious ride into the underbelly of illegal sports gambling, featuring a cast led by another dynamic duo: Sebastian Maniscalco and Omar J. Dorsey. I’m looking forward to watching more of their antics in season two. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew, and thanks to our partners at Max,” said WBTV chairman Channing Dungey.
Early on in the show, Bookie made waves by bringing back Lorre’s old co-star from Two and a Half Men, Charlie Sheen, who makes an appearance as himself in both the premiere and the season one finale.
During an interview with THR podcast TV’s Top 5, Lorre stated that Bookie symbolised his streaming future because this year will see the end of both of his remaining CBS comedies, Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola.
“I may be pitching a little. I don’t want to go too far down that road. I still feel pretty lucky. I have a great deal of fun playing in the sandbox, and until they tell me to go home, I’m going to keep trying. But some of [the shows being developed are for broadcast], yes,” he told the podcast.
