According to David Ornstein, Liverpool has extended a ‘opening contract offer’ to in-form forward Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian’s current contract at Anfield expires next summer, after which he will be free to leave.
Salah has started the new season and life under Head Coach Arne Slot in dramatic form, scoring 15 goals and assisting 12 times in just 21 games across all competitions.
His efforts are a major reason why Slot’s team is at the top of both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League rankings, and his impact on the team is as strong as it has ever been.
Despite Salah’s efforts on the field, there were no signs of progress in negotiations to extend his stay at Anfield, with the attacker conceding that he was’more out than in’.
According to Ornstein of The Athletic, there has been some progress, with Liverpool making a ‘opening contract offer’ to Salah.
This is the second report in the last 24 hours claiming that Liverpool and Salah are now negotiating, following The Mirror’s claims that he was close to signing a new two-year contract.
While this appears to be moving in the right direction, the Football Correspondent highlighted that this does not imply that a deal is ‘done or closed,’ and that patience is required while conversations continue.
Ornstein also said that skipper Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have both been offered new contracts by the club, with talks currently underway.
This is the first time Liverpool’s management has publicly stated their aim to tie down three of their most important players, and fans will be hoping that a solution is now in sight.
