Sony is preparing to unveil its upcoming film, The Legend of Zelda.
The studio’s live-action adaptation of the popular video game is scheduled to hit theaters on March 26, 2027, as announced by Nintendo via their app on Friday morning. Wes Ball, known for directing last year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, will be at the helm of this project, although details regarding the plot and cast have yet to be revealed.
This film adaptation draws from the iconic Nintendo franchise that began in 1986. The fantasy series follows the adventures of the young hero Link and Princess Zelda as they strive to rescue the kingdom of Hyrule from the clutches of the villainous Ganon.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s upcoming Godzilla x Kong movie, which opens in theaters on the same day, will compete with Zelda. The week before, Paramount’s fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which is based on the video game series of the same name, will also be released in theaters.
The film is being distributed by Sony and is a collaboration between Nintendo and Avi Arad’s Arad Productions, Inc. Shigeru Miyamoto, a representative director for Nintendo, is producing the film alongside Arad.
The live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda was first revealed in November 2023, with Miyamoto sharing that he had been working on this project “for many years.” He mentioned, “We have officially begun the film’s development, with Nintendo playing a significant role in the production. While it will take time to complete, I hope you are excited to see it.”
Zelda holds a special place in the hearts of Nintendo fans, as the company is known for its careful stewardship of its franchises. Universal’s 2023 release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, featuring the voices of Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy, became the first film to adapt a Nintendo property since the 1993 live-action version starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide.
Director Ball, recognized for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy, also directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which earned nearly $400 million globally.
