Serena Williams has affirmed she is pregnant with child number two, telling correspondents at the elegant Met Occasion in New York that there were “three of us” on honorary pathway, where she showed up with spouse Alexis Ohanian.
The 23-time major champion wrote in an article for Vogue magazine last year that she was “evolving away from tennis” and that she wanted to start a family after welcoming daughter Olympia in 2017.
“Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the three of us to the Met Gala,” Williams said in a TikTok post on Monday night.
Williams is a long-time friend of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who also serves as Met Gala co-chair. Williams regularly attends the annual event, which raises money for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On Monday, she wore a black gown with a white skirt that was form-fitting.
The subject of the current year’s occasion was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Magnificence”, to pay tribute to the late Chanel fashioner.
Film from honorary pathway showed Ohanian, a business person and the prime supporter of Reddit, tenderly laying his hand on the waist of the 41-year-old Williams.
Williams, one of the most decorated athletes to ever pick up a tennis racket, appeared unlikely to return to competitive tennis following the announcement.
A few well-known athletes were in attendance, including fellow tennis great Roger Federer, who was dressed in a black tuxedo and wore dark tortoiseshell sunglasses. Former US Open champion Andy Roddick, who was dressed in a similar black dinner suit but was wearing formal slippers, was also present.
Brittney Griner, a basketball star from the United States who was detained for nearly ten months in a Russian penal colony, and Eileen Gu, a freestyle skier from China who has won two Olympic gold medals, were both present at the event.
