OpenAI Launches ChatGPT App for Windows: Here’s How to Get It

OpenAI’s initial ChatGPT app was first published on the Mac in May, and now it is available for Windows as of Thursday. At the moment, customers may download it for free from the Microsoft Store for Windows, but it’s only accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Education subscribers.

As a beta test, OpenAI is marketing this release. OpenAI notes on the app’s Microsoft Store page, “We plan to bring the full experience to all users later this year. This is an early version.” Notably, ChatGPT appears in the Windows store as classified “T for Teen” by the ESRB even though it isn’t a video game.

OpenAI’s app is essentially the same as ChatGPT’s web browser version, save for the requirement that users log into a paid ChatGPT account upon starting the app. It can be used to access the following models at the moment: GPT-4o, GPT-4o with Canvas, 01-preview, 01-mini, GPT-4o mini, and GPT-4. Additionally, it can examine uploaded data and photos or produce images using DALL-E 3.

With Windows 11, you may use the Alt+Space shortcut to quickly start a small ChatGPT window when the app is active (we tried it with Windows 10, but it did not work). That could come in helpful whenever you want to ask a quick query on ChatGPT.

Additionally, just like with the web version, OpenAI’s servers run all of the AI processing in the cloud, necessitating an Internet connection.

As is customary, talk like someone is observing and avoid using ChatGPT as a reliable source of information when making critical decisions. GPT-4o in particular excels at giving you the information you want to hear, regardless of its accuracy. In a brief disclaimer located at the bottom of the application window, OpenAI states that “ChatGPT can make mistakes.”
