OpenAI Set to Release GPT-4.1 With Major Upgrades

OpenAI GPT-4.1 AI Model

OpenAI is preparing to unveil a new series of artificial intelligence models, as reported by The Verge, citing insiders familiar with the company’s plans. Among these anticipated releases is a model likely to be named GPT-4.1, which will be an upgraded version of the GPT-4o multimodal model introduced last year. The GPT-4o model was notable for its capability to analyze and reason with text, audio, and visual inputs simultaneously.

The upcoming GPT-4.1 is expected to be launched alongside more compact versions, namely GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano, which could be available as soon as next week.

In addition, OpenAI is set to introduce its o3 reasoning model, along with a smaller o4 mini variant. AI engineer Tibor Blaho recently discovered these models within the ChatGPT web platform, suggesting that their official release may be just around the corner.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has teased a “cool” new feature that will be coming soon via X (formerly Twitter), though it remains uncertain if this is related to the forthcoming o3 and o4 mini models. Reports indicate that some of these launches might be postponed due to ongoing capacity issues, a challenge Altman has acknowledged.

Earlier this month, Altman cautioned users that future releases could encounter delays, performance hiccups, or slower service as the company works to alleviate infrastructure pressures. OpenAI has already faced challenges, temporarily limiting image generation features due to increased demand, with Altman humorously noting that “our GPUs are melting.”
