Rory McIlroy has finally won at Augusta National.
After a wild finish, McIlroy defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to win the Masters for the first time and complete the career grand slam. He tapped in a 4-foot putt for the victory, but his final putt sent him into an emotional frenzy on the green.
That earned him his first career green jacket and put a stop to his major championship drought, which had lasted since 2014. In addition, he is the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win the career grand slam, making him only the sixth player in history to do so.
Given the significance of the win for McIlroy’s career, this is probably far less significant to him, but he is also leaving Augusta National with a check for $4.2 million. That is part of this week’s record $21 million purse.
Last year, the Masters awarded a $20 million purse, setting a record for the competition and matching the purses of the majority of the other major events on the PGA Tour schedule. Then, in April of last year, Scottie Scheffler won at Augusta National and received a check for $3.6 million. The Masters’ top prize was The Players Championship, which came in at $25 million. This year’s tournament included the same prize fund, and following his playoff victory at TPC Sawgrass, McIlroy took home a check for $4.5 million.
In contrast, the U.S. Open, which took place at Pinehurst last season, set a record of $21.5 million among the four major tournaments. There was a $18.5 million purse at the PGA Championship and a $17.5 million purse at the British Open. At their respective competitions, all four major championships offered record purses, and this year is likely to be no different.
Despite making two double bogeys that day and almost losing a huge lead on the back nine, McIlroy defeated Rose in the playoffs to win. In the history of the competition, McIlroy is the first player to win the Masters after having two double bogeys in his final round. Rose, who had been in the lead for the majority of the week, battled back to finish at 11-under, alone in second place. In his career, he has already lost twice at the Masters in the playoffs. McIlroy’s final partner, Bryson DeChambeau, slipped and finished five strokes behind.
