Sony Announces ‘Street Fighter’ Movie Release in March 2026

Street Fighter has been given a US release date of March 20, 2026 by Sony. Legendary’s film is being developed and produced in collaboration with Japanese game distributor Capcom.

Legendary has secured film and television rights to the hugely popular game series for 2023. Since the series began in 1987, Street Fighter has sold more than 49 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most iconic and highest-grossing video game series of all time.

It has also spawned other games, spinoffs and crossovers with characters such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile and M. Bison. Capcom is behind other popular games such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

This isn’t the first time Street Fighter has made it onto the big screen. Universal made a film adaptation of the same name in 1994 starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia. In 2009, 20th Century Fox released Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starring Kristin Kreuk. Both projects were critical and commercial failures.

While game adaptations are often considered box office flops, there have been a number of successes in the genre in recent years, including Sonic the Hedgehog and its 2022 sequel, Tom Holland’s Uncharted, Dungeons & Dragons, and Honor Among Thieves and Super Mario Bros. In the world of television, the film adaptations of “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” have also proven popular.

Legendary, which has a distribution deal with Sony, has experience adapting novels, comics, and other genres into films, including “Dune,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” and “Enola Holmes.” The company severed ties with Warner Bros., which released “Dune: Part 2” earlier this year.
