SZA’s “SOS” is back at the top of the album chart (it was at No. 15 last week) following the release of a 15-track deluxe reissue called “Lana.” This marks the Grammy-winning album’s 11th week at No. 1 since debuting in December 2022. Prior to “Lana,” “SOS”‘s last week at No. 1 was in March 2023, a 22-month gap between each week. It is the longest-running album on the list, dating back 67 years.
This count relies entirely on Luminate, the data company that runs the Billboard charts and combines units earned from both the main LP and the deluxe reissue for tracking and charting purposes. “SOS” earned 178,000 album units in the U.S. in the week ending December, debuting at No. 1 on the chart dated January 4. 26. The official stream count for this set has now grown to 220 million.
SZA commented, “The fact that yall have me at number one for a third day w no playlisting,” in an X post in response to her ranking as the top artist on Spotify’s Global Artist rankings. No radio, no promotion. Orion Deluxe. You guys always got me no matter what, which is why I give it my all. Thank you.
There was a lot of anticipation ahead of the set, with the official release beginning in early December with snippets from the new album Kitchen, followed by the visual treatment for Drive starring Ben Stiller. SZA also released “Saturn” as a single in February after singing the song at the Grammy Awards, where it was nominated in three categories (with “SOS” receiving nine).
Plans for a deluxe edition were first made public in interviews surrounding the 2022 release of SOS, although the album itself has been a long way from completion, released almost five years after her official debut album, Ctrl.
The Lana reissue features just one guest artist — 30 for 30’s Kendrick Lamar — and her frequent producing team, which includes Thank God 4 Cody and Carter Lang, with other contributors ranging from Lil Yachty to Benny Blanco.
The rest of the Billboard 200 top 10 is filled with holiday favorites, including Frank Sinatra’s “Ultimate Christmas” at No. 10, marking the late icon’s first top 10 debut in over a decade. Michael Bublé’s “Christmas Is Here” comes in at No. 2. Bing Crosby’s “Ultimate Christmas” is No. 3. Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” is No. 4. Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas” comes in at No. 6.
Apart from “SOS”, the only other non-Christmas sets to rank higher are Lamar’s “GNX” at number 5 and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” is in seventh place, and the film soundtrack “The Wicked” is in eighth place.
