It’s Taylor Swift once more.
The rerecording of her 1989 album, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), is currently the best-selling album in America for 2023 after less than a week of release. With over 1.6 million copies sold in the United States and over 3.5 million worldwide, the album has topped the Billboard 200 this week, as well as the vinyl albums and streaming albums charts. She becomes the first artist in history to have six No. 1 album debuts with more than a million units sold thanks to the latter accomplishment.
Now that 1989 (Taylor’s Version) first-week sales have topped those of 1989 in 2014, it is the first Taylor Version to debut with more sales than the original.
Swift previously held the record for the most Spotify albums streamed in a single day with her 2022 album Midnights, which had entirely new songs including hits like “Anti-Hero,” “Karma,” and “Bejeweled.” This week, Swift’s most recent album broke that mark.
1989 (Taylor’s Version) is the singer-songwriter’s fourth album to be rereleased after Scooter Braun bought Big Machine Records and took ownership of her master tapes. Prior to this, she released the songs Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), Red, and Fearless (Taylor’s Version). Swift has achieved greater debuts with every Taylor’s Version release that has come out.
All of the songs from the original album are included in her most recent reissue, along with five brand-new vault tracks: “Is It Over Now?,” “Say Don’t Go,” “Now That We Don’t Talk,” “Suburban Legends,” and “Slut!”
The 2014 album 1989 featured the hits “Shake It Off,” “Bad Blood,” “Wildest Dreams,” “Blank Space,” and “Style.”
In August, Swift revealed 1989 as the upcoming Taylor’s Version during the last night of The Eras Tour in Los Angeles. The two albums in her catalogue that haven’t been rerecorded are Taylor Swift (2006) and Reputation (2017).
