“The Flash” is taking off at the box office, with $9.7 million in previews at the box office.
The Warner Bros. film, which stars Ezra Miller as the DC Comics speedster and is directed by Andy Muschietti, who made “It,” has been on the road to theaters for a long time, but it will finally open this weekend. In its first weekend, “The Flash” is expected to make about $70 million, with some estimates as high as $85 million and others as low as $68 million.
That anticipated opening is in line with previous DC Studios projects like “Black Adam” from last year and “Aquaman” from 2018, both of which opened to $67 million. However, Warner Bros. is probably hoping that “The Flash” is more like his companion from “Justice League” than Dwayne Johnson’s antihero. While Jason Momoa’s “Aquaman” surged to $335 million in North America and $1.14 billion worldwide, “Black Adam” stagnated with $168 million domestically and less than $400 million globally. There is no doubt that “The Flash” will perform better than “Shazam: Fury of the Gods,” which opened with $30 million but only $57 million at the end of its domestic run. Regarding previews on Thursday, “Black Adam” brought in $7.6 million, “Aquaman” $9 million, and “Shazam: $3.4 million was made by “Fury of the Gods.”
“The Flash” brings back Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s versions of Batman in addition to Miller’s Scarlet Speedster. To defeat General Zod and save the multiverse, Barry Allen, aka the Flash, must team up with another version of himself, Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, when he travels to a different dimension to stop his mother from dying.
Pixar’s “Elemental,” about two water and fire beings who fall in love, is expected to make $35 million in other releases this weekend. Following 2015’s “The Good Dinosaur” and 2020’s “Onward,” which both opened to $39 million, it may be one of Pixar’s lowest openings. In previews, it made $2.4 million. The Black horror satire “The Blackening” from Lionsgate is expected to open with $7.5 million, and its previews brought in $900,000.
