According to The Athletic’s James Mirtle, the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed two defencemen: Alex Biega and Carl Dahlstrom.
Biega, 33, is a veteran defender who’s been on the edges of the NHL for some time. He got into thirteen games for the Detroit Red Wings last season, so there’s very little motivation to anticipate an ordinary player, yet he’s a solid defensive presence who can either occupy time in the pressbox or be a steadying presence on the Marlies.
Dahlstrom, 26, was in the AHL last season for the Henderson Silver Knights. He’s showed up in the NHL for 64 games across three years with Chicago and Winnipeg. He’s enormous and strong, without much obnoxiously.
The two players seem like NHL/AHL tweeners, and them ranking somewhere in the range of seventh on the NHL depth chart to top four in the AHL wouldn’t be an surprise. Timothy Liljegren may be disappointed to have these folks as competition, They do think.
UPDATE: These deals are true. Both are two-way contracts with an AAV of $750,000 at the NHL level.
