The prize money for the 2023 US Open has been significantly increased. Coincident with the anniversary of 50 years of equal prize money, the New York Grand Slam set a record for its prize money.
This competition was the first major event to offer equal prize money to male and female competitors back in 1973. This achievement is more impressive when you realise that fifty years ago, the winners only won $25,000 each, which contributed to a prize of only $100,000.
“[Fifty years ago], people probably went, ‘Huh? What? The women are going to make as much as the guys?’ This is a huge event to do that. It starts to change the hearts and minds of people,” tennis legend Billie Jean King said.
“People think there’s money in women now. That’s why they’re buying soccer teams. That’s why they’re buying basketball teams. That’s why they really are investing now. There’s no question, the values have gone way up. People think it’s a good investment. That never used to happen, at least in women’s sports”.
