Valerie Sweeten, author, blogger, teacher, and freelance writer, released her latest book, The Donut Tree as an eBook on Kindle in January 2021.
The Donut Tree is Sweeten’s third book.
Her other two books, Shh, Listen: In the Rainforest and Shh, Listen: On a Safari, are also on Amazon available in hard copy.
The Rainforest book, published in 2014, follows a family on a trip to Ecuador, and the Safari book, published in 2017, in the second in the series of Shh, Listen books and takes the family on an adventure to Tanzania. The Safari book has been sold in the Houston Museum of Natural Science in their gift shop.
The Donut Tree is the story of a boy who discovers a donut tree while out on a walk. He then meets the owner of the donut trees, Sprinkles who shares the story of how the donut trees were created and her purpose of spreading joy, sharing, and meeting new friends.
Sweeten is also the founder and editor of the blog, Hot in Houston Now at Hotinhoustonnow, which was established 6 years ago. She is also a Creative Writing Teacher with Writers in the Schools teaching students in second and third grade.

About Valerie Sweeten
Valerie Sweeten, a native Houstonian and University of Houston graduate, worked as an editorial assistant for People Magazine’s Southwest Bureau in 1991 in addition to freelancing for the Houston Chronicle in 1992. While at People Magazine, Valerie published several articles including one cover/collaboration Houston based, Teen Pregnancy story, and coverage of President George H.W. Bush after his presidency.
Valerie’s work with the Houston Chronicle since 1992 to the present as a freelancer has covered a wide range of topics in feature writing ranging from coverage on area businesses, education, food, employment, local events, personal profiles and much more.
In 2009, Valerie was nominated for a Barbara Jordan Media Award for the Texas Governor’s Committee for People with Disabilities and then again in 2010. She has contributed to various
publications including The Buzz, a local community magazine group, the Houston Business Journal, and Examiner as their Houston City Buzz reporter.
In 2014, Valerie published her first children’s book, Shh, Listen: In the Rainforest, and in 2015, she launched her own lifestyle blog, HotinHoustonNow. In December 2016, Valerie’s second book, Shh, Listen: On a Safari was published, and by 2017 was accepted into the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s gift shop for sale. In 2018, Valerie joined Writers in the Schools as a Creative Writing Instructor teaching elementary-age children. In January 2021, Valerie published The Donut Tree on Amazon on Kindle.
Over the years, she has collaborated with numerous non-profits such as Catholic Charities and Neighborhood Centers, Inc. developing brochures and websites. In her free time, Valerie has contributed her services to agencies such as Healthcare for the Homeless, the Lupus Foundation, and Bering Omega Community Services for AIDS. She also has been a two-time Career Day Speaker by invitation at her alma mater, St. Pius X High School in Houston.
Valerie currently volunteers with the non-profit, Literacy Now and has also volunteered for multiple years with the Read Houston Read.
Valerie resides in Houston with her husband, their four children, and a small pack of mini-dachshunds.
