VMAs 2024: MTV Achieve Largest Multi-Network Audience in Four Years

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, once again energized by Taylor Swift and her string of major wins, drew its largest audience in four years.

Wednesday’s ceremony, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, reached 3.11 million viewers during its premiere broadcast across 13 networks, up 25% from last year, according to early Nielsen data. When repeats were factored in, the audience grew 8% to 4.09 million from last year’s 3.78 million.

In addition to MTV, the show was also simulcast on BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land and VH1.

Paramount Global also saw 66.7 million social interactions, clearly better than the Super Bowl and surpassed only by Tuesday’s 2024 presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. This is the most “social” VMA broadcast ever.

To put that number in perspective, last year the company announced that the show generated 46 million social impressions.

Swift, who was nominated in 10 categories, led the ceremony with five wins in total, including Artist of the Year and Video of the Year for her duet with Post Malone, “Fortnite.” Other award winners included Ariana Grande, Eminem, Megan Thee Stallion and SZA. Sabrina Carpenter won Song of the Year (“Espresso”) and Chapel Lawn won Best New Artist.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry won this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. She also won for Most Iconic Performance.
