Which US Company Hires Workers with Most H-1B Visa?

Since 2020, Amazon has consistently lead the way in recruiting talented foreign workers through the H-1B visa program. A recent report from the Pew Research Center reveals that in fiscal year 2023, the e-commerce powerhouse obtained over 11,000 H-1B visa approvals, accounting for 2.9% of all visas granted that year.

As the premier online retailer in the United States, Amazon remains a magnet for exceptional global talent, solidifying its status as a frontrunner in technology and innovation.

Amazon continues to lead as the largest employer of H-1B visa holders, but several prominent IT and business services companies also play a significant role in hiring skilled foreign talent. Firms such as Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys, and Tata Consultancy Services are notable contributors to the program.

Among the tech giants, Google secured the fifth position by hiring close to 5,550 foreign employees in 2023, which is less than half of Amazon’s total. Microsoft followed with approximately 4,800 H-1B approvals, while Apple brought on around 3,800 foreign workers.

On the lower end of the spectrum, Tesla employed just under 1,100 foreign professionals, accounting for only 0.3% of all H-1B approvals among the 30 companies examined in the Pew Research Center study.

An Overview of the H-1B Visa Program

Established in 1990, the H-1B visa permits U.S. companies to recruit highly skilled foreign professionals for specialized positions that demand advanced knowledge. To be eligible, applicants must possess at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification in their area of expertise.

The visa is initially granted for three years, with the possibility of extending it up to six years. If an employer sponsors a worker’s application for permanent residency (Green Card), the visa can be extended beyond the six-year limit.

In 2023, nearly 400,000 H-1B applications received approval, with 65% being renewals and the remainder representing new approvals for first-time employment.
