Wicked achieves yet another domestic box office record in 2024. The first half of the two-part movie version of the Broadway musical of the same name, which was directed by Jon M. Chu, opened in theaters on November 22 and is presently in its fourth week of release. The film’s box office continues to reach new heights as the holiday season enters another lucrative phase, having recently surpassed the $524 million milestone globally. In November 2025, the second installment—now named Wicked: For Good—will be released in theatres.
According to The Numbers, Wicked has made $365.2 million, placing it in third place among the top 2024 American box office films. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which made $636.7 million at the domestic box office in the summer, is right behind the Universal movie. Inside Out 2 from Disney and Pixar now holds the #1 slot with $652.98 million.
How This Affects Wicked
Wicked is probably going to hit more records before its theatrical run is up.
The duration of the film’s run in theaters may be influenced by its box office performance. Wicked may last longer than the typical 12- to 15-week run of blockbusters, which means it will continue to be shown in theaters well into 2025. Unfortunately, Deadpool & Wolverine is ahead by little under $300 million, so it probably won’t go any higher on the domestic ranking. Despite this, performing at number three for the entire year is an amazing achievement, particularly considering Wicked’s late release date.
Wicked is already one of Universal’s highest-grossing films and a record breaker, which is definitely encouraging for the sequel. The movie is a little lower on the global box office after Kung Fu Panda 4 and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, coming in at number eight for 2024’s total earnings. But in the upcoming weeks, it has a decent possibility of rising a few spots. Both Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2 are at the top of that list, giving the impression that they will be the greatest winners of 2024.

The movie builds on the original story from L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, despite being a prequel. It appears that Wicked has set the stage for an even stronger 2025 performance with its remarkable box office and critical success.
