‘Wicked’ Overtakes ‘Mamma Mia!’ To Become Highest-Grossing Stage Musical Adaptation Globally

Globally, Universal’s Wicked surpassed the studio’s own Mamma Mia! to become the largest stage musical adaption ever. With $424.2 million coming from domestic box office receipts and $210.2 million from international ones, the total expected worldwide cume through Sunday is $634.4 million.

Another $13.7 million was earned from 81 markets overseas this past weekend. The best stage musical adaption ever in 46 of those is Wicked, which was directed by Jon M. Chu. The Broadway adaptation had previously become the largest domestic adaptation ever.

Mamma Mia 2, Maleficent, The Little Mermaid, and The Greatest Showman (apart from China) are all released at the same time as the current offshore performance.

Due to the holiday season, some markets close their movie theaters on Christmas Eve and/or Day. The Cynthia Erivo/Ariana Grande film saw a 1% increase worldwide, with a notable +7% increase in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region.

According to last weekend, the UK and Ireland saw a 2% increase, while at the same time, their $67M is in line with Wonka. Wicked became the third highest-grossing film of the year in the marketplace during the week, surpassing the lifetime of The Greatest Showman and surpassing Despicable Me 4.

Australia has surpassed the lifespan of Aladdin and the first two Jurassic World films, with a 29% increase during the sixth weekend. It has surpassed Dune: Part Two to become the fifth-biggest game of the year on the market. With a 32% increase in weekend four, the Netherlands likewise saw a significant spike throughout the vacation.

The UK ($67M), Australia ($24.8M), Korea ($14.2M), Germany ($11.8M), and Mexico ($9.9M) are currently the top 5 foreign markets.

On March 7, Wicked will be released in Japan.
